Since the mods changed Depends to Carroll, they should be logically consistent and change this title to Derek Carr, otherwise it is gross hypocrisy.
I did not care before but fair is fair. The guidelines have been established.
(Not that I am surprised by their attitudes.)

Even though he’s retired, Carr serves as very important baseline for the entire NFL:
The Carr Line.
Jim McMahon, Trent Dilfer, and Brad Johnson don’t tell you anything when it comes to a Super Bowl winning QB- after all they won a Super Bowl. Yes they had historic defenses, but that’s the point.
Carr on the other hand never even won a playoff game. He proves that average isn’t enough. And the reverse is true: a great team can drag a quarterback to victory, but Carr shows exactly how far a team can go when the most important position on the field is limited. He was high floor, but his ceiling wasn’t much more than his floor.
The closest in this regard was Andy Dalton. But even there not beating Carr for the example of the line: Carr was more talented than Dalton.
To sum up put Carr on the 85 Bears, 2000 Raven etc and yes he becomes a SB winning QB. Place him on the 1980 Raiders? Likely he’s not making it out of the WC round.

I don't think Carr could hold Todd's jock strap in regard to talent.Attyla wrote: Tue Oct 07, 2025 1:49 pm I think Carr is Todd Marinovich but his brothers are the crazy family member

Another thing I’ve always found odd was “yeah well his defense was terrible!”
Let’s grant that as 100% accurate. So?
A terrible Defense doesn’t excuse his play at QB on offense. In fact here is an odd thought: he’s in part responsible for it. What do I mean? Not that he played Defense but rather who we could put on defense because of his contract. This isn’t an indictment of Carr solely because it’s true of any QB who has a high salary relative to the team.
Or put another way? If a QB is getting paid highly it’s likely out of proportion to the rest of the team, defense in particular. If that is the case the QB in question has to in part elevate his game to account for the lesser amount of resources in the other side of the ball.
This doesn’t explain everything away fully, but it’s certainly an interesting thought experiment

The team invested in defensive draft picks (to balance the QB salary), especially in 2016 and 2017, and almost all of them, except Maxx, stunk. Gruden and Mayock signed a slew of defensive guys to massive contracts and they all failed too. The Chiefs had to pay Mahomes and they figured out to field top ten scoring defenses for all three Super Bowl wins.
Raiders defensive ranks every season Derek Carr has been the starting QB:
2022: 27th
2021: 26th
2020: 30th
2019: 24th
2018: 32nd
2017: 20th
2016: 20th
2015: 22nd
2014: 32nd
Two playoff berths with that performance is to be expected. The franchise hasn't fielded an elite roster since 2002 and the results show.

You missed the part with a terrible defense doesn’t excuse his play no?
Yes the defense can be terrible and Carr at the same time. Or above average if you want with Carr.
I should add I’m of the opinion there are a lot of factors as to why the Raiders have been bad for decades. Bad QB play of which Carr was one is a factor, perhaps the most significant.

I figured you eventually try that.
So I suggested we take a chance on a kid with what turned out to be a truly messed up knee. And? There have been others that would have been good. I wanted Herbert and so far Dart looks to be a good.
Still better than backing Carr for years after everyone saw he wasn’t the answer. Perhaps even still doing after he retired.

Carr quarterbacked well enough for the team to make the playoffs in 2015 and 2020 as well if the defense wasn't awful (especially in 2020 with a top ten offense)

It was 2016, not 2015. In 2016 he was great. The Real CK wrote: Wed Oct 08, 2025 12:39 pm Carr quarterbacked well enough for the team to make the playoffs in 2015 and 2020 as well if the defense wasn't awful (especially in 2020 with a top ten offense)
The team, Josh Jacobs, the Defense the last 5-6 games, and Carlson kicking something like 5 last minute FGs, plus Covid decimating teams in turn right before we played them got us in the playoff the other year not Carr.
