Drafting Kickers, Yea or Nay?
As the title says, split off from the college thread: opine about all things kickers. Truly riveting.
Oh and Seabass is overrated by Raider fans.

Some people really like the OP staying at the top. Some don't. We've discussed it and decided the sentiment was more in favor of it and it does help to remind people what the actual thread is about and it's easy to scroll past. EE/DH was permabanned a while ago and that opened up a bunch of fresh page/thread real estate anyway.

I must be in the minority, but I hope they can re-sign Carlson. One kicked was blocked. Cant fault him on that one. Three of his misses last year were in frigid KC from 55+. He shouldn’t have been kicking them to begins with.
He made a 55 and 60 yarder to close out the season.

I’m just glad that Carlson‘s kick with 53 seconds left against the Chiefs to win the game did not blow the number one pick for us. There’s more great kickers in the NFL than I’ve ever seen, and it’s not just that they get to use their pre-massaged balls (that’s what she said). If Carlson wants too much money, they are probably 5 current college kickers coming out who will be kicking in the NFL within a year or two. I am fine with drafting one in a late round.

Raiders released Jeff Jaeger for Cole Ford who was just plain awful. Followed up by the likes of Greg Davis, Michael Husted, Joe Nedney.
After SeaBass they had Giorgio Tavecchio(okay his injured year), Mike Nugent, and Matt McCrane.
Replacing Carlson won’t be as easy as some y’all think it will be.

Kickers are after thought, until the teams season, playoff, or Superbowl are on the line. Then you wish you had the best one money or draft pick could buy.

The problem with the idea of the best kicker that a draft pick can buy is that a draft pick can't buy you one - it might just lock you in to one who doesn't pan out but you keep him too long because you used a pick on him.
The best kicker in the game is usually a udfa - can you say that about any other position? It's not that it isn't nice to draft a kicker, but you're potentially missing out on a good player at another position where udfas aren't often the best players.

Carlson has become mediocre the past three seasons. I'm not against resigning him but its also not a priority. I dont mind using a late 6th or 7th rounder on a kicker as those guys most often dont end up as major contributors anyway so if the kickers sucks you just move on. No valuable picks used for kickers.

I did some AI research and the don't draft guys appear to be right. But I think if you see a kicker as generational off the charts good. Use a lower pick and grab him. Like you stated most 6th and 7th rounders end up in the garbage anyway.DanKD wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 7:23 am Carlson has become mediocre the past three seasons.
