The Offensive Line Coach Thread

Unread post by Willmark »

As we just saw with the departure of Brennan Caroll under the latest Raiders regime- Offensive Line coach is critical. So much so, I’d argue after the OC (or in our case HC/OC combo) it’s the most crucial position coach on the offensive staff. (Maybe QB Coach too)

We can’t get Bill Callahan and Dante Scarneccia (formerly of NE) is retired. Who else is out there? Quick aside- Dante pieced together offensive lines in NE with spit, glue, rubber bands and duct tape and they won Super Bowls.

I’m also off the mindset this hire might matter even more than DC. We’ve got a lot of pieces for the offensive line that I believe were simply used or not instructed on why they wanted them to do last year.

We’re not talking best line ever in the history of the game, but I think we can take a huge step forward from what we saw last year with the right coach.

We don't need the cap space and it just creates more dead money later if you're moving on via cut or trade. Restructures aren't necessarily bad unless they prevent you from moving on from an underperforming player, but when you have as much cap space as we have, they just aren't necessary. Staying in a more pay-as-you-go mode with guys under contract allows for decision flexibility down the road.
Yeah note my edit. A user needed me to fix something…couldn’t finish my thought.

I'm sure that as we get into FA, many people will freak out and want restructures to create money. As long as you're signing quality humans, you can sign FAs with smaller year 1 cap hits without great risk. Where you get into trouble is if you're signing guys who, on a personal level, make you want to move on from them early in the contract (Wilkins, Chandler Jones) - and this year I would put Pickens as a potential on that list. Stay away from deferred cap hits for headcases.

The guy that’s hardly produced any decent NFL players and produced an absolutely horrendous O-line this year, and was completely unable to run the ball?

That Alabama Line coach?

The only College coach I’d be interested in is George Barnett from Iowa

From reading up on it, the additional titles people use are not seen as promotions. Teams can still block them from moving. Although, they are used to entice the coach to come over, as more titles mean more money and more chance of being a HC in the future.

But with Kubiak being the HC and the offensive coordinator at the same time, we could do what Green Bay have done and make John Benton our OC.
Then look to get a pass game coordinator to help with the responsibilities he wouldn’t be familiar with. Sombody like Greg Olsen who runs the same passing scheme as Kubiak. As all modern West coast offence is just a Gruden playbook at the core. Just with added pre snap movements and alignments.

I think it’ll depend on who Seattle get as the OC cause we might be able to get these guys if a new OC comes in & want his own guys

Benton, Janocko & Dennison seem to be the guys that have moved around with him

For me Benton is the key hire for us due to his ability to develop young linemen, get good OL play & get the run game going

I know that Dennison is a very experienced coach, but how much of that experience is as o-line coach?

8 years as offensive line coach. Mostly with Denver. Multiple years as an OC/run game coordinator. He knows the zone blocking scheme and how it's all supposed to look top to bottom. From the line to the QB to the receivers. He's not just a line coach. He was on his second stint as Denver's oline coach when Kubiak hired him as OC in Houston

Hes like the career military guy who was in Vietnam in 1963 as an advisor. It's now 1969 and you're a new draftee with this guy as a platoon leader. He's seen some shit and knows whatsup man. The Shanahan wide zone is probably something he could teach blindfolded. That said, I'll be interested to see who the assistant oline coach will be. Id imagine they'll hire one

Thanks. That's good to know. I had no doubt that he knows every detail of how things have to work schemewise, but I feel this o-line has a lot of players that need the fundamentals coached into them. Basically a lot of bread and potatoes of o-line coaching. So it's good to know that he actually coached o-line for a long time.
