Solid science from just the last few years:
It shrinks your brain.
Increases risk of a number of cancers.
Increases risk of dementia.
Personally, I have gradually reduced my wine consumption by about 80% over the last 15 years or so. While you see far less smoking in movies today, notice how alcohol use is still treated in movies — “you look like you could use a drink.” Just like for decades cigarette use was normalized. It is changing due to much clearer science.
OK - back to the depressing state of the Raiders.

Not just that, but, alcohol also inhibits treatment/drugs effectiveness for those who have already been diagnosed.RunOverByHubbard wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 6:44 amAlcohol use is at a 90-year low and being led by Generation Z who are saying “I don’t smoke cigarettes because it is poison so why would I drink alcohol?”

Just like lead (as in the heavy metal), the World Health Organization has found "there is no safe level of alcohol". But, I know many will continue to drink, some because they think of this rationale: "my 95 year old grandfather smoked his whole life and never got lung cancer." I have a friend (an alcoholic) who has defined (or regarding today's standards, redefined) moderate drinking to be 3-4 drinks a night. Then there is the "French Paradox" that drinking wine (mostly red) is actually good for you -- it protects you from heart disease. That study was funded by guess who (think $$ to be made) and debunked quite a while ago. But, I know folks will continue to drink. My wife loves wine but has tried to cut back as the science has strengthened. One of the weirdest things of late was the federal government, led by Dr. Oz saying that is is OK to drink as it helps people socially, clearly overriding the health concerns. To each his own and I get it. I am trying to live as long as possible and eat super healthy (and exercise) but WTF, I get a rare brain circulation problem. Life is like that, eh?raidersince63 wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 7:41 am Not just that, but, alcohol also inhibits treatment/drugs effectiveness for those who have already been diagnosed.

It takes copious amounts of blood to supply that massive brain of yours, but intermittent circulation? ...Pshhh !RunOverByHubbard wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 8:33 am I am trying to live as long as possible and eat super healthy (and exercise) but WTF, I get a rare brain circulation problem. Dude, vaping and gummies replaced alcohol for many. I doubt society has suddenly gotten healthy in o e generation. Crutches haven’t been thrown away but rather exchanged for something else in most casesRunOverByHubbard wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 6:44 am :zany: Alcohol use is at a 90-year low and being led by Generation Z who are saying “I don’t smoke cigarettes because it is poison so why would I drink alcohol?”

On another note, several years ago I stopped drinking and was eating well and exercising regularly. After a few years I suddenly got throat cancer. I always joke that I had a great thing going until I started being healthy lol

Sorry to hear about your throat cancer. I’ve had two friends get that —one was definitely linked to the Papillion virus, the other was unknown. Neither one were smokers though.Xramfan wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 8:52 am Dude, vaping and gummies replaced alcohol for many. I doubt society has suddenly gotten healthy in o e generation. For sure I talk to my daughter and her friends (college kids) about weed as I’m fairly experienced in that area of life. I’ve cautioned them about smoking weed with with the high THC levels of today’s weed which is very unlike what we were smoking circa 1969 —to go easy as studies have shown negative changes in the brain of teenagers who are smoking a lot of potent pot. Edibles are for sure a game changer in terms of how people use weed. Do you know a single person who has overdosed on an edible? The good news is that it’s usually a benign experience in the end.

Thanks. They initially thought it could be HPV related as I wasn’t a smoker either and it wasn’t oral cancer as in a smokers/drinkers mouth. It was cancer found in the walls of lymph nodes in my neck just under the jaw line. One radical neck dissection and robotic base of tongue surgery later and they deemed it job related due to exposures I had over the years. All good now for the most partRunOverByHubbard wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 10:03 am Sorry to hear about your throat cancer. A little curious, what were your job related "exposures"?Xramfan wrote: Tue Apr 14, 2026 10:11 am Thanks.
