On to the Chargers.
After a successful week one win, the Raiders are going to their second home at the Chargers this week.

I'm not the guy to defend him. I know Kirk isn't what he once was, however good he may have been or not. What he is at the moment is a seasoned vet that Mendo can watch in real game situations.... and learn, even from Kirk's mistakes.NoThanksSir wrote: Fri Sep 18, 2026 1:26 pm I find it interesting more than anything. Glad we have Kirk to give Mendo a long runway, but you point out the material reality of Kirk's poor performance and some rush to defend him. Hard to understand why, folks are desperate to have an opinion I guess. Personally I'm completely fine losing a couple of games if it means Mendoza avoids injury and is primed for the big stage when the time comes. But Kirk Cousins did not have a good game week 1 and we're not winning many games with a guy who goes 1-7 downfield against the Dolphins...it's the only reason we're talking about the timing of Mendoza starting right now.
I want Mendoza out there. I also understand Kubiak's reasoning for not throwing him out there. IMO.... I think we will all be grateful for the care being taken with Mendo. Most of the best of the best QB's in the NFL have sat for a while. If we end up with Peyton or Aaron... or Tom... I think we will all be on board with that.

I'll mention it for the 3rd time...Kubiak calls the plays so how do we know that he even called a long shot down the field during the Miami game, a long post pattern or anything of the sort? Fact is, we don't.
If Cousins can throw it 40-50 yards during camp, he can certainly do the same during a game. Again, relying on the running game and short passes underneath are a large portion of Cousins' scheme. And both of those facets looked good in that game. We jumped to an early lead and controlled the clock and the line of scrimmage and the result was a fairly easy win.
Just because Cousins has not thrown the long ball, doesn't mean he can't.

He threw three TD passes.NoThanksSir wrote: Fri Sep 18, 2026 8:44 am The tape tells a different story. Benson and Tucker both have speed and both were open at times but Cousins could not deliver the ball.
Why couldn't Cousins get them the ball? Was his throwing lane obscured? Were his feet not set? What qtr was it? Were we protecting the lead? Was there something underneath that would have moved the sticks and had a higher likelihood of succeeding?
If you want to bring up tape provide specific examples. Speed and playmaking ability are two different things.
In every game there are open receivers that are not targeted for one reason or another.
Last year's home game against the Bolts was a joke. Our receiving corps were not able to consistently gain any separation, in fact the announcers singled that point out as a massive liability in that contest.
Cousins will be fine if he limits the interceptions.

Late response as I was driving back all day from the beautiful Oregon coast. Answer — no I am not saying Mendoza is ready. He is close but not ready. His preseason play shows that.Attyla wrote: Fri Sep 18, 2026 12:20 pm So Mendoza is ready but the weapons and protection are questionable is how I am reading this.

Your whole reason that he was not ready was based on others. What about his game makes you think he is not ready?RunOverByHubbard wrote: Sat Sep 19, 2026 5:59 am Late response as I was driving back all day from the beautiful Oregon coast. I get that. It's like Charlie Brown finally not wanting to try and kick the football anymore.
It's on them to change our expectations. I am feeling more positive than in a long time at least. Still mindful not to be Charlie trying to kick the ball again.- These users gave a High Five to the author powski for the post:

If Malik Benson cuts back in instead of trying to take it outside, it's a much larger gain and potentially a touchdown. A well drawn up reverse by Klint Kubiak.
It was just something that irked me and I had to mention it. Still don't see him as an upgrade to Thorton. Thorton was key in our week 1-win last season. On the other hand, I don't think the Raiders lose a step if Benson hadn't played that Dolphin's game.
