Free agency opens March 11. CBS Sports has their top 50 ranking. No Raiders on the list. I am surprised at a couple rated high - Aaron Rodgers and Daniel Jones. Lots of wide receivers

Given their GM got fired and KoC is still there, maybe he didnt want to let Darnold go. Its also possible his ego got in the way thinking he could turn shit into caviar
Typical of every NFL franchise as you never know what is truly going on behind closed doors and many times years later you still get finger pointing. Seeing O'Connell is still there they feel he is more valuable than the GM...

So, have I got this right?
After the draft teams will start cutting players from their squads.
So, say we didn’t get a good prospect at FS in the draft, another team that did pick up a good FS may cut the one they already have who might be serviceable for us?

It's hard to find good FS in FA after the draft, but it isn't hard to find an upgrade on Pola Mao so we could improve there.
I haven't looked at potential cap casualties for a while but there can be some serviceable olinemen that become available after a team drafts the next guy.

There are teams out there with large safety rooms, and with the devalue of the position on some teams we might see reasonable upgrade level players cut after the draft, but more likely we see one or two decent options during team cut downs during preseason

YES, its true after the draft a lot of veterans and avg players are cut to make room for rosters and to save a little on cap

I haven't looked at the league rules in some time but, since the Raiders are #1 in the draft and lousiest team last year does that mean the Raiders have first rights to any players cut? Also is there a limit to the number of players the Raiders could claim or is it unlimited?

Yes the Raiders are the first in the line on any waiver claims. The only players subject to waivers if released right now are players with less than 4 accrued years of service. The players more likely to be cut this time of year and soon after the draft are probably not subject to waivers. No there is no limit to the number of waiver claims the Raiders can make. It is a tool more likely to be of use right after other teams make their final cutdowns to 53.

Thanks for the info Chucker. it will be interesting to see what Spy and staff do from here on out. Since we used most of the available cap I doubt there will be much in waiver claims.

Waiver claims are usually dirt cheap because they are young players on rookie deals and so they cost next to nothing vs the cap. Claim a player making $1.2 million and he might knock someone else off your top 51 cap space making a million. So it only cost you $200k in cap space. That's also why those players won't likely hit waivers until the final cutdowns, because they're so cheap.

So say if a player has 6 or 7 years of accrued service, and is under contract, and his team cuts him now he's a free agent not subject to the waiver wire?

AI Overview
No, NFL veterans with 6 to 7 years of experience are not subject to waivers if cut during the preseason or early regular season.
Veterans with four or more years of accrued service are considered "vested veterans" and are exempt from the waiver wire process for most of the year.
Here is the breakdown of the rules:
Vested Veterans (4+ Years): If cut between the start of the league year (February) and the NFL trade deadline (usually early November), they are immediately released and become unrestricted free agents.
Non-Vested Veterans (<4 Years): Players with less than four years of experience are subject to waivers if cut and can be claimed by other teams.
Post-Trade Deadline Exception: After the trade deadline (around Week 9), all players, including vested veterans, are subject to the waiver process.
Therefore, a veteran with 6-7 years of experience who is cut during final roster cuts (preseason) will instantly become a free agent and can sign with any team immediately.

Good no but agreed we can address it via a stop gap. Peppers or Wood would be improvements on likely vet mins.

Not a Hondo fan by any stretch but this wasn't a bad take if not an obvious one. If this has already been linked in another thread my apologies.
