The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft

Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders:
“If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year.

I hate to be pessimistic about Miller but if he is going to miss major time again I would rather not try Grant at right tackle, rather just go ahead and slot him in at left tackle and be done. (given he played left in college, not positive about that, but tired of moving guys out of their natural positions)

Exactly where I'm at. He should be nowhere near RT.

I assume you mean that Caleb Rogers should be given a shot at LG. I agree. I'd like to see Grant get a shot at supplanting Glaze at RT. It's possible that Zuhn gets a real shot at RT as well, but it's also possible that they just work his versatility as a rookie and give him a year to develop before slotting him into one position.
I just don't care who plays as long as it's the best 5 - I think Miller and Linderbaum have positions sewn up as they should. Like you, I don't put a ton of stock into the play we saw from anyone on the line last year under Pete's worthless son.
Again, agreed as I'm just after the best 5 as well.
Seems I recalled it being stated by coaching they wanted versatility?
Here is the officially official list of OL on the roster and what positions they have designated for them...
Guard… Burford, Pickett, Mafi, Rogers, Zuhn
Tackle… Glaze, Grant, Miller, Henning, Jatta, Missouri, Wagner
Center… Linderbaum, Putnam
C/G… Meredith, JPJ
As with the entire roster when the cuts start rolling in it wouldn't surprise me if we added someone else for the OL, but setting that aside that's 16 guys fighting for between 8-10 spots? Miller and Linderbaum are locks. They had JPJ at RG and Glaze at RT so I'm going to go with this is the spot they think suits them best and I would also speculate out of those two Glaze's job is up for grabs. Miller will be LT and Linderbaum C and seeing they have JPJ listed at two positions and had him playing at RG, that unless someone else just blows them away at RG that he will be playing there and they don't see him as a LG. So going by the official roster it appears LG will be a fight between Burford, Rogers and Zuhn. RT Glaze and Grant, as Henning, Jatta, Missouri and Wagner look to be long shots.

...not reading too much into it, but apparently they had Zuhn at RT during ota's
In his 2 years DJ hasnt broken free from the pack. RT is up for grabs.

I think so also. Both of them are solid prospects with solid coaches.

...agree, but I also give last years group a pass for that offensive offense, and the coaches in charge of it...

Most of the guys can be given a pass for last year. No excuses this year.... they suck or they don't, from here on.

Coaching will obviously have an impact on these kids. I hope I am dead ass wrong, but I don't feel it with Glaze. I just hope these coaches do not suck it like the previous staffs (in regards to sticking with trash like Parham for so long). We FAILED Jeanty last season and I hope we do not fail him and Mendoza this season.

ESPN wrote an article: one best and one worst off season moves by the AFC teams (I assume the NFC one dropped by now).
The signing of Parham for 8 mil over two years was the example of worst for whoever did it.

The Jets did. I have a friend who was so excited that they signed him. He read a feel good story about him. I had to give him the real story. That is why I pay more attention to actual fans then mouthpieces. I have another friend who is a die hard Niners fan. He told me that Burford is GARBAGE and this is what I expect from him.

I said the same exact thing on here and was mocked, as I have a friend who is a die hard Niners fan and was ecstatic to see Burford gone. He's trash and I pray he isn't in our starting lineup.

I didn't know anything about the guy. What's weird is Spotrac has him listed at left tackle, I think he played there in college. Thought Spot was better than that. Maybe I should use OTC. He's on a 1 year deal so if he sucks, cut him. Dead cap would be tolerable 2.7

I still say they have too many guards and not enough tackles.
