The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft

Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders: “If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year. :cuss:

Perhaps, maybe one could say a good part of the blame is on the coaches and the play calls.
Now if they are calling quick pass plays and he's fumbling that, then he should have been benched.

There was so much blame to go around that completely dysfunctional offense, but it took all that to get Mendoza.

I read an article a while back and they were talking about the raiders offensive "scheme" last year. And how many of the plays didn't have an underneath receiver or a hot route. It was basically stand there and wait on the play to develop along with bc and his non coaching of the offensive line to the point they had to go to spytech and have meetings of their own away from practice to try and figure out what they were supposed to do

There have been players who have came into the league then switch sides & even position

Tackle is one of the positions we see it happen, guys come in having played LT in college then transition to RT in the NFL until teams think they are ready to take over the QB’s blindside

Report are out there that Grant has been cross training as a RT for the last year so it is not out of the question that he can move to RT

Grant skill set is a great fit for what Kubiak & Dennison do so if he has been working the switch then that can only benefit us

It's partially a footwork issue. Moving from side to side does happen, but it takes a while to get that first step right because instinct sets in. It is also hand placement and all of the leverages required and there is a natural dip that happens once you engage your opponent. It can happen, and it does happen but it requires a lot of unlearning and learning. Obviously the earlier a player begins the process the better so doing this while also learning a different blocking system would be a challenge even for a top rated player. Tackles are island guys, and the ZBS requires a nimble of foot kind of guy. I think RT is just going to be a bit of a challenge this year no matter what we decide to do.

As they used to say years ago: IT'S LIKE WIPING YOUR ASS WITH THE OTHER HAND WHEN SWITCHING SIDES AT TACKLE!!!!

Sewell played exclusively LT in college then started the first half of his rookie season at LT before switching and playing rest at RT at an elite level. Many guys have made the switch.

No idea if grant is capable of that but it happens often enough.

Many is a subjective term. Most the guys who try fail or are inferior. There is a reason guys play one or at most two positions on the line. The data you need to process quickly can be overwhelming. And again, remember, guys are also learning a new system. That doubles the amount of information you need to process.

I think this position group is an enigma. While we got our center and we have some pieces, we just don't know how long it is going to take to get it from mediocre to improved. Especially RT and we don't know how the guards are going to perform. Powers Johnson needs to make the jump almost immediately for us to keep our QB upright. While we don't know how the DL and secondary are going to perform, we do know both position groups were huge focuses in the off season so based on the moves and signings we know they thought very little of the talent in those areas.

Let's call it like it is. The team did not do enough (from a player standpoint) to address the O line this offseason, as of now. Linderbaum was a big get but that's it. They appear to be really relying on coaching. Let's hope it works out.

Is it weird that I am looking forward to seeing the defense early on far more than the offense due to that very thing?

Glazer is probably our biggest question mark. Had Pete played the rookies more we may have a more definitive answer at RT. I believe he’s backup material and feel we can do better than him at even guard.

Glaze at RT and left guard. I do not want to see Burford starting.

Absolutely
They do repetition drills to gain muscle memory, to the point of taking a lot of the thinking out of the play. Take away the thought process and you play with more confidence and faster.

the speed aspect of this is a far underrated part. Yes, you are blocking and not typically moving very far, but there is a lot of speed that goes into it. the pop move and the hand placement and reaction is very fast.
