Raiders set to release QB Geno Smith after 1 season in Las Vegas

Should surprise nobody as he would be a horrible mentor for Mendoza. While Raiders fans should be eternally greatful that Geno was so terrible that the Raiders finally finished 32, this guy won't be missed. Raiders have had a lot of terrible QB's over the years but he's by far the least likeable of the lot. Whether he was on the sidelines looking dejected and mopy, or flipping the bird to fans, he came off extremely unlikeable and the fact is that he was one of the very worst QB's in 2025. Good riddance!

I fully understand the process from the other side. What teams are lining up to pay Geno Smith anything when better QB’s like Murray, Tua, Cousins, Willis, etc will all be available? Smith will likely be a consolidation prize for a team that misses out on the other QB’s and should be able to be signed on the cheap. All these QB’s are getting released because interested teams want to sign them on their own terms.Cruisin with Tooz wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2026 9:51 am Its not 27 million. You dont understand the process. The Raiders would convert a portion of his salary (eg 13 million) into a bonus, then trade him. The Raiders take the cap hit for 13 million instead of the18.5 cap hit they would take by cutting him. The acquiring team takes the cap hit for the redone salary, 13.5 million.

read chuckers commentCruisin with Tooz wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2026 10:03 am Reducing the dead money increases the cap space by that amount. Every dollar you reduce the dead cap hit by increases the cap space by 1 dollar. Youre basically saying you want that 8 million in cap space instead of 13 million in cap space.

Sure but I think the odds of trading him are basically zero. If you leave him with a $5 million guaranteed plus the $8 million that is still remaining to vest then a team has to commit to $13 million. I don't think anyone is even doing a late round pick swap for that money. I'm not saying it wouldn't be awesome, but I'm being realistic that it isn't happening. I think it's possible that he ends up getting more than $5 million - although I think he may not even get that much. It doesn't cost anything to find out and might save the team $4 million.Cruisin with Tooz wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2026 9:58 am Convert 13.5 of the guaranteed 18.5 before the remaining 8 vests? Yes. So they get the 8 million savings + another possible 5. But why not try and trade him for nothing before you cut him? That way you are definitely getting the extra 5.

Does this close the door on the few that believed The Raiders should trade the 1st pick for a huge return?

The guy was playing on a $25 million/year contract for a team that knows what theyre doing, in Seattle, the year before. Lets face it, our OL and OC deserve a great deal of ownership over his performance. Did his perception around the league tank so much that a qb-needy team in a year with few draft options wouldnt consider 1 year at half what he was making in Seattle? If thats the case, so be it. I wouldnt even ask for a prospect swap. Have them give us a Joeschmo FA they arent resigning who was not even good enough to get them a comp pick -- essentially nothing in return. If a trade doesnt materialize, so be it. Then my proposal converges to your proposal.

Geno is going to be 36. Maybe he's not 100% as bad as he looked last year but his career is winding down. He's probably a 5 million per year backup now.

He had one good year in Seattle. He is not trade worthy because teams know we aren't keeping him. Why give up anything for a guy who will be on the market in two days? People seem to think "hey, we don't want his soggy ass but there is a market for the guy" while not realizing he was on the worst team in the league and threw an bunch of picks. Will someone sign him? Sure, there is a sad number of QB needy teams and only so many guys to fill those needs. Is anyone trading for him? Not one team

I want to personally thank Geno for setting up the Raiders to have the realistic opportunity to finally alter their coarse and get back to winning ways we from the old school are accustomed to. Geno, you have left us with the winds of change a blowing. Your work is done, now get the f[raiders_icon]ck out of here.

Probably the worst personality/attitude of a QB in Raiders history.
I can see why his own teammate knocked him out 11 years ago.

I suspect that the Raiders explored the option of paying a bunch of Geno's salary in these discussions and got nowhere. I think that one issue is that teams may want to see how some other QBs look for price and availability before they'd look at Geno so the timeline may not fit for a trade, even if the money is cheap.

Dude sucked here but the deck was heavily stacked against him.
F rated OC and a oline that competed with 2006.
He was part of the deliver us to Fernando group.
