Probably similar to what Miami did with Tua or Denver & Russell. Ate money just to get rid of himRickRyb wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 11:32 am Pelissero added that the Raiders will be paying the bulk of Smith's salary to facilitate the trade and the Jets will get the QB while paying a little over the league minimum.

I am not even going to guess other that to say we will still eat 18.5. Maybe there is a little cap savings this year.

I was speculating on the amount. Maybe 2 million is too much to move up from the 7th to a 6th. But yes to your question. Instead of 8 million cap space, we would get 8 million minus whatever bonus we gave him.LesterHayesHOFer wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 11:51 am Does that mean the Raiders get an extra $6M of cap space?

Just read that we get credited 1.3 million from the 18.5 hit this year.

The new contract will prolly have a bunch of incentives. Geno prolly had permission to beat the bushes for the best offer and the best situation for him. I guess its possible that there was more than 1 team who wanted him on a league minimum deal. So with actual competition maybe thats how they got draft compensation. Kudos to Spy if thats the case and he didnt have to pay for that pick swap.Hellbound wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 11:57 am Probably similar to what Miami did with Tua or Denver & Russell. If it's straight up, then the Jets would be taking on the entire $26.5, 18.5 of which is guaranteed. Would think the only negotiation is the 8M that was not guaranteed. If that is the case, that would be freaking huge, cap wise, which I doubt. They probably negotiated with us, how much we pay of the 18.5. Then they probably worked on that 8M unguaranteed portion with Geno.mstrbass2000 wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 11:51 am schefty is reporting the jets renegotiated geno contract , does this mean the trade was straight up ???

If the Raiders lost 8 million in cap space that they would have got with just cutting him, for a 6th round pick while giving up a 7th, that's a terrible move. 8 million in space for a 6th rounder? That 8 mil pays almost half the draft class.Cruisin with Tooz wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 11:56 am How else can you explain it? Its reported that the Jets are only taking on the league minimum. What reason would Geno forgo the ability to negotiate with all 31 teams if he wasnt getting the league minimum plus something extra? And how would LV be getting draft capital if they werent the ones providing the something extra? Need to see the details.

This makes a lot of sense in terms of what Geno/ his agent has been doing the past 4-5 days. Rounding up offers and bringing it to Spytek.Cruisin with Tooz wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 12:09 pm The new contract will prolly have a bunch of incentives. NFL League Minimum for 7+ years of service is 1.3M. We are getting a credit of 1.3M against the cap.

Okay, based on what I have gathered from the Geno Smith trade...
Looks like Raiders are saving $9.3M against the cap, as opposed to just $8M had they released him.
LV moves up from No. 228 to No. 208 in April's draft, not from No. 217, as originally reported.

But, and if it was a restructure / 'signing bonus' payout, will the Raiders move some of that money to future years? If cut, the full $18.5M dead cap would have been tied to the 2026 season. Now?

Great trade for the Jets. They just got themselves the #1 pick in 2027

Yep, they can pro rate that signing bonus, depending on how many void years they can add.DrDUne wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 12:25 pm But, and if it was a restructure / 'signing bonus' payout, will the Raiders move some of that money to future years? If it was a cut, they have the option to designate it a June cut and split it.
Neither of these cases happened in Geno situation.
