Raiders pay up for edge Kwity Paye

Top 150 ranking: 103
Reported deal: 3 years, $48 million
Grade: F

Paye is a physical run defender and can set the edge in that phase. He lacks juice as a pass rusher. Paye is more of a pocket-pusher. He does not have much diversity in his moves. Paye likes to bull rush, but he is not powerful enough to win consistently in this way. Among 64 edge rushers with at least 300 pass rush snaps last season, Paye ranked 54th in pass rush efficiency with the Indianapolis Colts, according to PFF. He is a useful player. But $16 million per year is an overpay for an edge rusher who is going to affect the run game far more than the quarterback. — Popper

To be fair, that's pretty much all Maxx did and we got him at a fraction of the price.

If this is true, our front 3 is woefully inadequate. And that's being kind.

Good thing they still have cap space and 11 draft picks

I agree with the low grade, maybe not F bc it fills a need but I'm not a Paye fan and hes coming off a bad year.

Money ball. We're trying to stop the run.

I would have rather have someone who has a ton of experience playing in the 3-4. One thing I am looking forward to is that he is great at containing/spying on the QB. Unfortunately, we play in a division where the QB's are good at moving the sticks with their feet. He is stout against the run and obviously its a major need. Lets hope a change of scenery/system works well for him.

Grades are so subjective. I have also seen him rated as a B+ signing and some people had him listed as a top 20 FA. Basically, who the hell knows.

For me this is our weakest signing at the money. Edge is in demand though. Hopefully he fits well in the new defense

I'm more excited about this signing than Koonce. I realize I'm in the minority, here.

I like the signing a lot. I also like bringing Koonce back for a year. His injury always meant a rough first season back. A good rotation of edge defenders is great. Make Maxx sit and take a breather sometimes

Paye does some things really well, not a sack guy but he keeps offenses honest.
