Actually the Goldman estate was awarded a very significant stake in OJ's financials. It really established a new level of award from an individual. Prior to that, awards of that size were usually reserved for business lawsuits.Toast wrote: Thu May 14, 2026 7:20 pm Oh, I agree. It's never that simple. The complexity of the legalities that you detailed in your post would require multiple attorneys to untangle and that alone would take a huge chunk of whatever monetary restitution could be awarded. You must have a law background?
On the subject kind of/sort of did the Goldman's see one dime from OJ's estate when he passed?
And my background that generated the post referenced is more in the realm of finance with a bent toward finance law. No law degree but I have a fairly broad understanding of state to state tax law.

Essentially correct. Unless you are using your vehicle as a weapon, drivers who have incidents that result in death get a manslaughter charge. Frankly, if you are going to intentionally kill someone, a vehicle is a terrible choice of a weapon. They are just not precise enough to ensure your goal is met. That said, I remember the downtown Nashville bomber who had the intention of killing himself in the bombing. He actually had a loudspeaker warning people to stay away from the RV. And it worked, police approached the vehicle, heard the warning and backed off just in time.Cruisin with Tooz wrote: Thu May 14, 2026 7:15 pm That's because in the vast majority of those cases, whether they involve intoxication or reckless driving or negligence, there is no intent to kill. If there is no intent, its not murder. Its involuntary manslaughter. To pursue a murder charge, it would have to be a deliberate intent to kill, eg those aholes who deliberately hit the bicyclist for fun. Or if it occurs during the course of another felony, eg a fleeing bank robber clipping a pedestrian.

Yep, heard of them. Cared enough to delve head first into them? Nope. I’m of the opinion that my opinion on any of it doesn’t matter.Cruisin with Tooz wrote: Thu May 14, 2026 6:21 pm Ever hear of the Bill of Rights? Federalism? Something about all prerogatives not explicitly enumerated in the Constitution as federal powers, are rights reserved to the states.

Suffice it to say, the original setup gave the states most of the powers to govern. Over time, the fed has taken more and more control. It is in recent years that the reverse has been the goal.Viper wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 4:39 am Yep, heard of them. Cared enough to delve head first into them? Nope. I’m pretty solid on the things I know and can do. I’ll admit this isn’t one of my strong points, I don’t find it interesting at all, really.Attyla wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 5:16 am Suffice it to say, the original setup gave the states most of the powers to govern. I try to focus on things that really, truly matter. Is Mendoza our franchise Qb of the future? Can Kubiak turn this franchise around? Shit like that.

I have to have a fairly broad swath of info to do my job and state tax law is key to accomplishing that. But your priorities are also one's I am interested in. But your job revolved around the questions you posed.Viper wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 5:29 am I’m pretty solid on the things I know and can do. That is the common denominator. Often your profession determines your interests.

I’d rather choke myself out with dental floss than have to deal with your job hahaAttyla wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 5:50 am I have to have a fairly broad swath of info to do my job and state tax law is key to accomplishing that. Math was never a priority to me in school. But my family were all engineers or in the medical fields (one notable exception) so I followed that in my education. I have my current job thanks to layoffs that opened the door into finance. Basically I ride a desk and computer all day these days.Viper wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 5:57 am I’d rather choke myself out with dental floss than have to deal with your job haha

in the modern era, the longest successful unretirement in the NFL was 5 years and has been done a few times. Ruggs was very young when he got arrested and I am pretty sure he is going to have a hard time hooking up with a team and an even tougher time being in football shape and playing on a roster. His talent was primarily as a burner and 6 years cooling your heels is not going to help his speed.

I'm sad that I can only give one high five for this post.

"Got me locked up, wont let me out"....
One stupid selfish decision made in a single moment resulted in that young woman's horrible death, and effectively ended Rugg's budding career. He should feel lucky he only got 10 years max.
