They are both trying mightily (and almost failing) not to laugh. What a great show that was.

So here is a fun one, and at the risk of being accused of just looking up shit, which is not true, but this is one of those more obscure TV moments in history that is just flat out fun....And given we have two prominent Canadians on the site, they probably could give even more details. OK, I did lie a bit, I did look up a name so that I spelled it correctly. Here you go.

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas created the characters "Bob and Doug McKenzie" to satisfy a law. No other reason other than to raise a big middle finger to be quite honest. SCTV was trying out various sketch comedy routines, and the group was loaded with talent. John Candy was just another face in the crowd with this project. But Canadian law required 2 minutes of "Canadian Culture" during broadcasts and SCTV was trying to figure out how to do it. Enter Bob and Doug McKenzie. Two idiotic Canadians swilling Canadian beer and talking about back bacon and sporting tuques (I had to look up how to spell that as well, sue me) and hosting a mock up of a show called "The Great White North." And it worked, it satisfied Canadian broadcast laws and the spot became SCTV's most popular segment. I even got so I was uttering "Eh" at the end of questions I was so engrossed with the characters.

That all spawned "Take Off" a mild hit of a song with Geddy Lee being prominently involved. The duo also did their version of "12 Days of Christmas" with their list of truly Canadian items. And of course the two also had a bit of fun with "Strange Brew" which is a movie staring the two and filled with SCTV alums among others.

And we have Canada and their broadcast laws to thank for it. Even though Second City refers to Chicago. I will have to look up why Canadian law applies, but I will do that in the dark of night.
